About Traunsee
The Traunsee is with 191 m depth the deepest lake of Austria . It is located in Upper Austria and after the Attersee the second largest lake in Upper Austria. The communities around Lake Traunsee are located in the Tourist Office Traunsee-Almtal in the Salzkammergut. The Traunsee was first mentioned in 909 in a document as Trunseo . On July 31, 1910, a boat accident occurred during the crossing from Hoisen to Traunkirchen due to a heavy storm, in which 15 mostly young people drowned. In August 1911, in the local cemetery of Traunkirchen, a marble memorial stone was placed over a mass grave behind the choir of the parish church.
On May 8, 1945, the last day of the war, a P-47 Thunderbolt crashed into the Traunsee. It was probably the last plane that lost the US Air Force during the Second World War in Europe. The machine was considered lost for more than 60 years, was only recovered in 2005 and recovered in 2006 from a depth of about 70 meters. For the first time, Spiegel TV broadcasted a documentary entitled Das Geheimnis der P47 im Traunsee on January 27, 2006 . 9 The machine named Dottie Mae was in Idaho in the United StatesIt was completely restored on June 22, 2017, for the first time after restoration.
