About Nonnberg Abbey

Nonnberg Abbey is a Benedictine religious community in Salzburg, Austria. Founded c. 712/715 by Saint Rupert of Salzburg, it is the most seasoned constantly existing convent in the German-talking world. The religious community complex is today a secured landmark and part of the Historic Center of the City of Salzburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. The religious community was set up underneath the Festungsberg slope and the destroyed strongholds of the previous Roman city of Juvavum. Its first abbess was Saint Erentrudis of Salzburg, who was either a niece or a sister of Bishop Rupert.

The convent's blessing was given by the Agilolfing duke Theodo of Baia and his successor Theodbert. The monastery ended up autonomous of the establishing house from 987. After a burst around 1006, the nunnery church was modified with the help of Henry II. This Romanesque building was again to a great extent wrecked in a fire of 1423. Recreation occurred in the vicinity of 1464 and 1509. In 1624 the congregation was expanded by the expansion of three side churches. A renovation in the Baroque style occurred in the 1880s. Tourists come here from all over the world with their family and friends.
