Wollongong Breakwater Lighthouse, otherwise called Wollongong Harbor Lighthouse, is a noteworthy beacon arranged on the southern embankment of the legacy listed Wollongong Harbor, in Wollongong, a beachfront city south of Sydney, New South Wales in Australia. Wollongong is the main place in the east of Australia to have two beacons situated in the closeness of each other, the other being Wollongong Head Lighthouse. While never again utilized, the beacon was re-established in 2002 as operational and is recorded an official nearby legacy building.
The Wollongong Harbor is home to private vessels and the nearby angling armada in the inward Belmore Basin. South of the city lies Port Kembla, a noteworthy steelmaking, minerals, grain and vehicle taking care of harbor. A further peril to delivery is an island amass referred to all in all as The Five Islands lying a short separation off the drift. The Wollongong Breakwater Lighthouse, referred to tenderly by local people as Old Wollongong Lighthouse, was worked in 1871 after a prior demand made by the Wollongong Borough Council in 1866 to help sailors securely explore the port of Wollongong at the beginning of the coal business in the Illawarra district.
It is arranged on the southern jetty, inside strolling separation to its more current twin, the Wollongong Head Lighthouse. Outlined by Edward Orpen Moriarty MA MInstCE, the Engineer-in-Chief of Harbors and Rivers Department, the pinnacle is built of fashioned iron on a Ferro-solid base to survive any intense climate in the zone. It is one of the two towers in New South Wales produced using created press plates—another indistinguishable one, Warden Head Light, was worked at Ulladulla Breakwater which later moved to Warden Head.
