About Maghnia
Maghnia is a town in Tlemcen Province, northwestern Algeria. It is the second most populated town in Tlemcen Province, after Tlemcen. The modern population is over 200,000. Archaeologists have observed proof of prehistoric people inside the vicinity, who have been displaced by way of the Phoenicians.
The remnants of burned Ancient Roman navy posts have been found through the French army in 1836, once they entered the vicinity; those posts had been occupied, according to the inscriptions, via a numerus Syrorum: a unit of Syrian archers. As such, it was the westernmost outpost of Mauretania Caesariensis. Due to its handy geographical place in the watershed of Wadi Tafna halfway between Fes and Tlemcen, Maghnia later served as a market for regional nomads. The Berbers named the place Lalla Marnia, after a neighborhood saint buried inside the place. Her mausoleum changed into probably built within the 18th century.
